Page Label Editor

Set the page numbers a PDF viewer shows - i, ii for front matter, 1, 2 for the body, A-1 for an appendix - to match the printed ones.

A PDF viewer usually counts pages from 1, so "page 14 of 200" may be the page printed with "6". Page labels fix that: the viewer's page box, thumbnails and go-to-page then use the document's own numbering - roman numerals for the front matter, a restart at 1 for the body, a prefix such as "A-" for an appendix.

The tool can read the numbers printed on each page and propose matching ranges, flagging skipped, repeated or uncertain numbers. Set ranges on the page grid or in the range table, or with the quick setup. Labels are metadata only - the page content isn't changed unless you also choose to stamp the labels onto the pages.

Simple workflow

How it works

  1. 1

    Add a PDF

Add one or more PDFs whose viewer page numbers don't match the printed ones.

  2. 2

    Set the ranges

Detect them from the printed numbers, use the quick setup, or start new ranges on the page grid.

  3. 3

    Save page labels

Download the relabeled PDF, plus a label scheme export and a report if you want them.

Frequently asked questions

Will the numbers printed on my pages change?

No. Page labels are metadata that viewers show in their page box and thumbnails; the pages themselves stay exactly as they are. If you want the labels printed on the pages too, turn on "Stamp labels onto pages" under Output.

Why can't the first range start on page 3?

A PDF needs a label for its first page. If your first range starts later, a plain decimal range is added for the pages before it - or give the cover pages their own range, such as the prefix "Cover".

My appendix shows AA, BB after page Z - is that a bug?

That's how the PDF letter style works: after Z the letters double (AA, BB, CC). For long appendices use a prefix with decimal numbers instead, such as "A-1", "A-2".
