Auto Bookmark Generator

Detect a PDF's structure - its table of contents, headings and numbered sections - and add a navigable bookmark outline.

The tool reads the document's own structure: a table of contents page (correcting for front matter that shifts the page numbers), headings by font size and weight, and numbered sections such as 1, 1.1 and 1.1.1, Chapter 4 or Appendix A. Running headers, footers, page numbers and captions are ignored, and every bookmark gets a confidence rating.

Before writing, you can edit the outline: rename, reorder, indent or outdent, delete, or add a bookmark by clicking a line on the page. Low-confidence entries are highlighted for review, and bookmarks the file already had are shown separately so nothing is overwritten by accident.

Simple workflow

How it works

  1. 1

    Add a PDF

Add one or more PDFs without bookmarks, or with incomplete ones.

  2. 2

    Detect & edit

Review the detected outline, fix titles and levels, and add any bookmarks that were missed.

  3. 3

    Add bookmarks

Download the PDF with its new bookmark outline, and an outline export if you want one.

Frequently asked questions

My PDF has a table of contents - will the bookmarks point to the right pages?

Yes. Printed page numbers usually differ from the PDF's page positions because of covers and front matter, so the tool matches the contents entries against the real headings and corrects the offset. Entries it can't confirm are marked for review.

No headings were found - what now?

Documents with a single font size (plain text exports, for example) have nothing to detect. Use "One bookmark per page", or add bookmarks by clicking lines in the page view. For scanned pages, turn on OCR first.

What happens to bookmarks the PDF already has?

By default they're kept and only missing bookmarks are added. You can also replace them, keep them unchanged, or extend them with bookmarks for the pages after the last existing one.
